With agricultural output totalling €9bn, the industry remains a vitally important sector of the Greek economy – despite the fact that nearly 70% of the country’s land is unsuitable for cultivation.
More than 70% of the agricultural output comes from cropping, of which fruits, vegetables and olive oil – 17% of the EU’s total – make up the majority. Cereals and oilseeds account for less than 10% of output.
